Understanding and Supporting Your Own Sensory Processing

Understanding and Supporting Your Own Sensory Processing

Presenter: Elana Cohen

This workshop is for people to learn about our own sensory needs and preferences, and how to meet them. The underlying premise of the workshop is that understanding your own sensory needs is a foundation support for lifelong mental health.

Learn about the 8 sensory systems and how they play a crucial role in our wellbeing throughout the day.

You will leave with a deeper understanding of your own unique sensory profile and insight into what you can do to fill your cup in ways that nourish, rather than deplete. We will identify our own sensory preferences and areas of distaste, focusing mainly on the proprioceptive, vestibular, and interoceptive systems – as these are less commonly understood.

Explore what conditions contribute to your personal nervous system regulation.

Practice advocating for your sensory needs with as much credence as other accessibility needs. Share in community around other humans with distinct sensory needs. Try out different ways to stimulate the 8 sensory systems and find your preference in real-time, bringing mindfulness to your physical experience.

I’m an occupational therapist and I’ve been working in this field for 20 years, the last 5 of which I’ve been here in Aotearoa. I’ve worked with people of all ages with a variety of physical, mental, behavioural, and cognitive disabilities. I am autistic myself, and I bring the lens of lived experience to my work.
