
Flax Weaving / Raranga Harakeke
Presenter: Maureen Harte
Participants will learn, by demonstration and participation, how to prepare flax/harakeke leaves, and then weave either a large “waikawa basket” as a communal project, or flax fibre rope, or flowers, as an individual project.
Presenter Bio:
Maureen: Learnt flax weaving in Rotorua in year 2000 – attended evening community classes at Māori Arts & Crafts Institute / Te Puia for a year.
Then transitioned into self employment as an artisan weaver and have been weaving ever since – 20+ years.
Have facilitated dozens of workshops, via community education classes and privately organised. And in settings as diverse as prisons and festivals.
