
Carnival Drumming
Presenter: Darryn Sigley
Suitable for: All ages and all skill level
A masterclass in carnival style percussion. A brief instructional on hand and stick technique. We will learn rhythms based on Brazilian style carnival drumming. Bring your own drum, shaker or bell and as we learn, we will create something to fit the instrumentation and personnel under the expert guidance of Darryn Sigley.
Presenter Bio:
Darryn has been involved in the community and percussive arts area for 25 years, performing and studying in Brazil, Cuba, UK, Europe, Singapore and South Korea.
In 2001 he co-founded Wellington Batucada: www.batucada.org.nz, a community percussion ensemble which emulates the samba schools of Brazil. Wellington Batucada has diversity and inclusion as a central part of it’s vision.
As a percussionist Darryn toured several times in U.K/Europe and Asia with Batucada Sound Machine. During these travels, he created a strong connection with an international network of percussionists. These experiences and connections have helped to enhance his role as musical director of Wellington Batucada.
Notable achievements:
●Recording artist with Fly my Pretties, Black Seeds, Batucada Sound Machine, Niko Ne Zna.
●International touring experience 2005 – 2014. Highlights include Montreux Jazz Festival, Sziget Festival (Budapest), Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
●Performed at Lunasa previously with Alpaca Social Club.
Darryn has a Bachelor of Music degree.
