Balfolk Ball at Lunasa

Balfolk Ball at Lunasa

Balfolk is a revival of traditional European folk dances and music, a vibrant fusion of centuries-old dance traditions and modern innovations; new ways of dancing old dances. Live music is a centrepiece of Balfolk, with musicians weaving together a range of traditional and contemporary music that reflects the dances’ diverse influences and folk traditions.

Michael Parmenter and Kate Grace will lead a Balfolk Bal (dance) at Lunasa accompanied by an ensemble of musicians led by Craig Denham. Following on from the daily workshops at Lunasa, the Bal is an opportunity to put into practice dances learnt in the workshop sessions, and experience the dances flourish in the context of the festival dance floor.

The Balfolk dances all have their own unique charm and rhythm; the elegance of waltzes, mazurkas, and scottische, the energy of bourrées and polkas, the calm yet vibrant quality of ancient circles dances, and the energetic foot stomping and movement of the contradances.

Balfolk events are typically very social, and you’ll have the opportunity to dance with various people. One of the defining features of Balfolk is its emphasis on community and social interaction. It brings together individuals of all ages and skill levels, fostering an inclusive environment where newcomers are warmly welcomed, and experienced dancers happily share their knowledge.

This dance form encourages creativity and embraces change, making it an ever-evolving experience with continued relevance and appeal. Balfolk is a lively cultural phenomenon, continually evolving to captivate new generations of enthusiasts.

Everyone of all ages, experience and skill levels are welcome to come along! Whether to join in the Ball with dances that you know, dance along in your own way, or just enjoy the music and great vibes.
