Hullabalou

Hullabalou

Hullabalou is a new Balfolk collective from Golden Bay. We have been immersing ourselves in Balfolk music and teaching dances for the past year during 2024. Over that time we ran 3 series of workshops and 3 Balfolk Bals in Takaka, having lots of fun, playing for the pure joy of the music and the connection that the dances inspire. Our mission is to bring this awesome contemporary European music and dance revitalisation to our local community.

The music that we play is drawn from a repertoire of traditional Balfolk music and compositions from the last thirty years, along with Celtic and Cape Breton tunes when traversing into the realm of contradances.

Our Hullabalou set of music on Monday evening at Lunasa is an invitation to integrate what you may have learned during the festival in the realm of Balfolk dances; or feel free and welcome to move or listen as you want to. We hope you will enjoy our arrangements of traditional and contemporary Balfolk tunes along with some improvising. Join us in a journey of French melodies, European folk tunes and dances; from frenzy to flow!

Musicians for this set are: Callie (violin), Craig Denham (accordion), Deb (whistle, flute), Jules (piano), Patrick (diatonic accordion, flutes), Patsy (violin).
