BandMouth: Beatbox and Beyond
Soundz Workshop
Presenter: Mal Webb
Suitable for: All ages
Around the world and into your gob, we will go on a lip to lung journey through the physics, physiology and phrivolity of all the sounds a face can make. Sideways yodelling, beatbox/mouthdrums/vocal percussion, harmonics/throat singing, mic technique, looping, advanced clapping and vocal distortion (without hurting) are all explored on the way to being a band with your voice.
This is a vocal workshop, focusing on singing styles and phrasing, songwriting, effective use of a metronome and music theory. Then we do it in groups… improvising songs and learning to interact as a band.
Presenter Bio:
Mal is a vocal adventurer, multi-instrumentalist and looping beatboxing songwriter who sings his songs about all manner of stuff, using all sorts of vocal techniques, guitar, mbira, slide trumpet, trombone, chromatic harmonica and a loop recording pedal called Derek. It’s a lip to lung journey through the physics, physiology and phrivolity of all the sounds a face can make. Sideways yodelling, beatbox, harmonics, throat singing, uvular fluttering, advanced clapping. He’s like Bobby McFerrin, Skrillex and Cole Porter playing scrabble. Ebulliently eclectic. Nefariously varied. Family fun free from facile frippery.
